Aim of the subject

Students will become familiar with the systems for transferring electronic mail, collaboration systems and IP telephony (VoIP)

Knowledge and skills

Students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to use a collaborative system, set up electronic mail transfer system as well as modern technologies for voice transfer over IP networks.

Lectures content

Basic principles of electronic mail transmission. Systems for electronic mail transmission on Unix and Linux systems. Electronic mail transfer and collaboration system - Microsoft Exchange. Managing e-mail recipients. Using the SMTP protocol. Electronic mail access - protocols (POP3, IMAP4, Web Access, MAPI). Monitoring electronic mail system. Administration of e-mail system. Archiving procedures (backup). Collaboration systems and electronic mail systems in other technologies (IBM, Novell ...), Basics of IP telephony (VoIP),
E-business and enterprise organization.

Exercises content

Laboratory:

Exercises consist of solving tasks on the computer in order to reinforce knowledge gained during the lectures: IP telephony, Configuring Linux mail server, Setting up the e-mail recipient, Using SMTP protocol, Electronic mail access, Monitoring e-mail system. Archiving.

Lectures are delivered through maximum use of drawings and charts to facilitate understanding. Blackboard and LCD projector are also used.

MINIMUM LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. To define the concept of collaboration and the most frequently used tools
  2. To explain protocols in general (POP3, SMTp, IMAP, MAPI).
  3. To define MsExchange application role and possibilities 
  4. To define the role and possibilities of collaboration application such as Exchange, Lync and SharePoint
  5. To define the term of PSTN and analogue and digital signalization
  6. To explain basic concepts of each VoIP protocol and Cisco telephony

DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. To recognize differences in modern and traditional collaboration and
    To recognize differences in modern and traditional collaboration and the tools used for each of them.
  2. To explain into more details the operation of protocols  (POP3, SMTp, IMAP, MAPI).
  3. To explain into more details the way of Ms Exchange application operation, work method and available possibilities
  4. To configure collaboration environment with a few different Microsoft services (Exchange, SharePoint, Lync)
  5. To define the difference between traditional and IP telephony, to explain main characteristics of a particular telephone signalization type
  6. To explain into more details each VoIP protocol, basic elements and message exchange, and terms directory number, route pattern, partitions, CSS
