Aim of the subject

Introducing students to the definitions of management, history of management, organizational structures, manager’s tasks, managers, quantitative methods in management, the importance of finance and accounting for managers in computer science.

Knowledge and skills

Upon completion of the course student is expected to be able to fit into a company and to be able to recognize the organizational structure.

Lectures content

Nature and development of the management theory. Definitions of management. Scientific management. Principles of organization. Methods of organization. The influence of internal and external factors on the organization. Organizational structures. Modern trends in the shaping of an organization. Relationship of the organizational structure and management. Division of the management. Levels of management. Strategic Management. Missions and goals.

Exercises content

Definitions and types of management. Characteristics of a manager. Organizational structures - classical. Organizational structures - modern. Relationship between owner and a manager. Network analysis. Benchmarking. APACS analysis. Financial reports. HRM. MBO.

Lectures are presented through audio-visual presentations using modern teaching aids (projector, video, audio, smart board).

Exercises are performed in couples, triads and separately using audio and video records for later analysis and feedback. Exercises also include group discussions, debates and separate presentations performed by students.

  1. To define management, its functions, activities and manager roles and to enumerate management skills.
  2. To explain internal and external company environment.
  3. To define planning, strategy and strategic management and enumerate different levels and types of planning.
  4. To define the concept , process and models of decision making and to enumerate decision making techniques.
  5. To define the concept and the content of organizing, to recognize organizational structure forms.  
  6. To define the concept and the meaning of staff, to describe recruiting, selection, training and staff development and to enumerate performance assessment methods.  
  7. To define basic leadership features, to enumerate leadership models and motivation theories.  
  8. To define control process and enumerate control methods and techniques.

  7. To compare leadership models and to recognize sources and methods of conflict solving.
  8. To explain levels of performance benchmark control.
